SENSORIMOTOR PSYCHOTHERAPY

Sensorimotor taps into the body’s innate intelligence, by way of the nervous system, which pays attention to the feelings we hold in our body.  Learning to pay attention, without going into “overwhelm” helps build strength, awareness, and helps move towards tolerating and reducing difficult feelings.  These feelings may be held in the body, and they may be experienced right now.  Sometimes, it’s difficult to put our finger on why we are having an emotion; in using Sensorimotor Psychotherapy techniques, we pay attention to how we hold these experiences in our body.  This helps resolve negative cognitions in a way that is more tolerable and paced, using the bodies intelligence as its resource.

“Sensorimotor Psychotherapy blends theory and technique from cognitive and dynamic therapy with straightforward somatic awareness and movement interventions…that promote empowerment and competency,” Dr. Daniel Siegel, Executive, Director, Mindsight Institute.
